In Japan, soapberry peels have been used for laundry and hair washing since the Heian period, and many soapberry trees were planted in aristocratic residences. The Honzo Komoku Keimo (1803-1905), a natural history book from the late Edo period, states about soapberry fruits: The outer skin of the fruit is commonly called 'shabon' and is used to wash oily clothes.
① How to make Mukuroji Liquid
The cleaning liquid made by boiling soapberry fruits for about 10 minutes can be used for washing dishes and hands. (5-6 fruits with 500ml of water.) Alternatively, dilute the cleaning liquid about 10 times and put it in a spray bottle. It can also be used as a natural insect repellent for plants.
Soap nut liquid should be stored in the refrigerator or a cool, dark place and used up as soon as possible.
For long-term storage, it is convenient to freeze it in an ice cube tray.
② How to Wash Clothes (Basic Method)
Place about 30g (about 10 whole fruits) of soapberry fruits in a wash bag (cloth bag) with your laundry, and tie the mouth of the wash bag with a string.
Put it in the washing machine together with your laundry and wash as usual. The saponin, the main component of the nuts, removes dirt and softens the fabric during rinsing, bringing out its natural softness. Can be used about 10 times!
③ How to Wash Clothes (Soaking, Hand Washing)
Soak the soapberry fruits in the wash bag (cloth bag) in hot or cold water for a few minutes.
Alternatively, shake soapberries with water in a bottle to create a light foam. This liquid can be used as a soaking solution.
Return the liquid to the washing machine and wash.
After washing, remove the wash bag and let it dry.
