Introducing a sand painting with a certificate of authenticity by Navajo artist Relinda Tom.
This sand painting has been elevated from a sacred ritual to a contemporary work of art.
This is an extremely rare and highly sought-after art piece among collectors, embodying the spirit of the Navajo tribe in every corner of its small frame.
The Navajo are the largest Native American tribe residing in the Southwestern United States.
The certificate states the following:
In Navajo belief, the universe is built upon a very delicate balance. If this balance is disrupted, disaster and illness are said to befall. To restore harmony, they perform chants and ceremonies using medicinal herbs, prayers, songs, and sand paintings.
Following ancient knowledge, the sand paintings are carefully and sacredly drawn. The patient sits on the sand painting, and the medicine man bends over, touches a figure within the sand painting, and then touches the patient, transferring medicine and power. It is believed that the illness leaves the person, and harmony is restored. Before sunset, the sand painting is brushed away with a sacred feather, and the patient rises to walk again in beauty.
The sand painting depicts the Yei, sacred spirits from Navajo tradition.
They are beings who mediate between humans and the Creator, bringing harmony and healing. The square head symbolizes the female Yei. The rainbow protects the sacred space and wards off disaster. The arrows represent the power to repel evil and celestial energy, empowering the patient.
The frame is made of oak, known for its durability, strength, and beautiful parallel grain.
The base to which the sand is adhered is a thin wooden board that resists warping from moisture.
The front and back of the frame are paper, with a hole on the back for hanging.
The square geometric patterns on the frame represent the following, signifying that the sand painting is protected by the cosmic order and creates a sacred space that brings harmony to the owner:
- The four cardinal directions that support the order and balance of the world.
- Guardians representing the four sacred mountains.
- The number four, essential for maintaining harmony, beauty, and well-being.
Decorating with this sand painting is said to bring harmony and beauty (Hozho) to the space. It is a wonderful sand painting imbued with delicate skill and spirit.
