Antique Staffordshire Josiah Wedgwood Commemorative Jug – Prattware, c.1850
N/A
A rare mid-19th century Staffordshire Prattware jug commemorating Josiah Wedgwood, one of the most influential figures in English ceramics. Produced circa 1850 and attributed to F. & R. Pratt of Fenton, this richly colored Victorian jug combines historical significance with striking visual presence. The jug depicts Wedgwood holding the famous “Portland Vase” in his left hand, standing proudly atop a pedestal, with the years of his life (1730–1795) displayed in a strapwork cartouche on the reverse. Greek key border around the rim and ornamental handle complete this distinctive design. An important documentary piece for lovers of British ceramics, Wedgwood history, or Victorian commemoratives. Condition: Overall good antique condition with expected age-related wear. There is surface crazing and a visible but stable old hairline near the base of the handle (see photos). Some loss to the silver lustre and minor surface marks consistent with age. Structurally sound and displays well. Details: • Attributed Maker: F. & R. Pratt, Staffordshire • Circa: 1850 • Material: Earthenware pottery • Height: 8.5” • Widest Diameter: 5” • Weight: 1 lb 4.8 oz • Markings: Unmarked except for hand-painted “965” on the base An important documentary piece for collectors of Staffordshire pottery, Wedgwood history, or Victorian commemorative ceramics.
