Description
Early 1900s
An antique chakla (round table) made in Western India (Gujarat to Rajasthan region).

Used locally as a low table for wedding ceremonies and guests. Tables of this size (around 80cm in diameter) are rarely found and are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain locally.

Geometric patterns run along the sides.
The subtle variations unique to hand-carving.
Flat bars of black, oxidized old iron.
Wedge-joint construction.
The texture of dry, aged wood.

Clearly different from mass-produced imitations,
it carries the weight of time and human hands.

Born not as decorative furniture, but as a vessel of purpose rooted in daily life, used, worn, darkened, and surviving to this day.

Including the surface wear, the dryness of the wood grain, the oxidation of the iron, and the gentle distortions of the wedge joints – this is not aging, but history.
The information of time, impossible to create artificially, has already taken form.

The strength of the nameless discovered by Kazumi Sakata—
It is not the maker's name or origin label, but the accumulation of hands and lives that gives an object class.
This table belongs to that lineage.

The beauty that Sōetsu Yanagi speaks of lies not in skillful design, but in the naturalness inherent in work done without self-consciousness.
The continuous geometric patterns are not for display, but exist as a prayer-like repetition.
The wavering lines, the uneven depth of the carving—their asymmetry appears, rather, as conviction.

The charm of primitive art lies not in immaturity, but in the strength of form that follows purpose.
This low table settled into this shape as inevitable according to its use, and time has refined it.
The moment it is placed in a space, the center of gravity of the room shifts.

This is something entirely different from currently imported folk craft-style furniture.
The density of the aged wood, the tightly closed black iron, the tension of the joinery.
It is furniture that also functions as sculpture, or rather, a tool for creating space.

Low seating, tatami, earthen floors, concrete, white walls, gallery spaces.
Wherever it is placed, it becomes an exhibition and simultaneously returns to daily life.
Few things can make this transition back and forth.

Dimensions: Approximately 78-79cm in diameter, 31cm in height.
Tables of this size are not found in bulk even locally.

This is not a currently imported product.
It is antique furniture that has passed through at least 100 years.

It has been re-evaluated in the European market in recent years,
and tables of this size sometimes trade for around €1,500.
